Club history:
The Sho-Me State American Pit Bull Terrier Club, Inc. was established in Kansas City, MO in March 1984, by Charlie Barnum; who was also the first elected club President. The co-founder, Leon Setser was the first elected club Vice-President. Mickey Leamer was elected the first club Secretary and Mary Brattin (Charlie's daughter) was the first elected club Treasurer. The only remaining Charter members are Bill and Mickey Leamer. The club was sanctioned in October 1984, by the American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA) of Salt Lake City, UT, a registry for the American Pit Bull Terrier. Sho-Me-State A.P.B.T. Club, Inc. is one of very few clubs to become sanctioned in six months.
As a sanctioned club, we are able to hold Point Shows so that dogs competing in either Conformation or Weight Pull can accumulate points towards titles (click on Conformation and Weight Pull tabs above for more information regarding Conformation and Weight Pulling).
The club currently holds its meetings in Oak Grove, MO, on the first Saturday of each month. Contact a club officer for directions.
Club members have show and pull dogs, as well as dogs that are pets. Although obedience, agility, and tracking are not sanctioned by the ADBA, some members participate in these activities and have earned titles and national recognition with other canine registries. Sho-Me-State A.P.B.T. Club, Inc., holds an annual two-day ADBA-sanctioned show that attracts entrants from all over the Midwest and beyond. In addition, the "Missouri Cup", a fun event that was started to introduce people to the sport of weight pull, is held in the Fall and is open to all breeds.
Sho-Me State encourages responsible ownership of all breeds, responsible breeding, and supports spaying and neutering of pet/unregistered dogs. The Club has also been involved with legislative activities
for many years fighting breed-specific laws in favor of generic, fairly enforced, yet protective
legislation.
For additional information please contact a club officer. Contact information is provided on the home page.
