"We, the members of the Sho-MeState A.P.B.T. club promote the welfare and the betterment of the breed to the public as family pets as well as a working utility breed. We acknowledge this breed's ancestry and recognize the other outstanding attributes it has to offer to serve mankind in a humane matter."
The club was established in March of 1984. The Sho-MeState A.P.B.T. Club is located in West Central Missouri. We have our meetings in Kansas City area. The club is sanctioned by the American Dog Breeders Association, Inc. (ADBA) for the purposes of exhibiting the A.P.B.T. breed in Conformation Classes and Weight Pull Trials in order to accumulate points toward Championship status in Conformation and Ace status in Weight Pull Trials.
Sho-Me-State A.P.B.T. Club was established to preserve the registered A.P.B.T. by breed standards set by the ADBA and to distinguish ourselves from those who misuse the breed for illegal purposes, irresponsible breeding, and inhumane treatment of this breed. Sho-Me-State A.P.B.T. Club promotes educating people about this breed's care, health, welfare and their responsibilities as dog owners in their community.
Anyone may join Sho-Me-State A.P.B.T. Club, Inc. after reading the club's Constitution and By Laws, attending two meetings, and having two sponsors. Current members have shown and/or pulled their dogs in competitions in several states. Although obedience, agility, and tracking are not sanctioned by ADBA, some members participate in these activities and have earned titles and national recognition with other canine registries. The breed has also been used for search and rescue work, as therapy dogs, stock dogs, and in the southern U.S. for raccoon and boar hunting. Sho-Me-State A.P.B.T. Club, Inc., holds an annual two-day ABDA sanctioned show that attracts people from all over the Midwest and beyond. Dave Farren, a long standing member since the club's beginning, created the "Missouri Cup" to introduce people to the sport of weight pulling. This event is held in the fall and is meant for socializing many people of many breeds and invites them to compete for fun. The dogs do not need to be registered and can be mutts. The Cup is perpetual and keeps changing hands - uh, er, paws!
Sho-Me-State encourages responsible ownership of all breeds, responsible breeding, and support spaying and neutering of pet and unregistered dogs. The club has also been involved with legislative activities for many years fighting breed- specific laws in favor of generic, fairly enforced, yet protective legislation.
